On June 3, 2026, works started with the modernization of the 12.5-kilometer single-track railway line between Plzeň and Nová Hospoda. The line will retain it's single-track character but will undergo a fundamental transformation that will significantly increase it's capacity, safety, and comfort for both passenger and freight transport. According to Tomáš Tóth, Director General of Správa železnic, státní organizace, this means the start of the modernization of the entire railway connection from Plzeň to Germany. It belongs to the priority projects from the perspective of both passenger and freight carriers.

The modernized line will undergo fundamental changes:

  • The maximum line speed for standard trains will increase to 125 km/h, and for tilting trains to 145 km/h;
  • The line will be fully electrified (it is not currently electrified);
  • At the Vejprnice railway station, the track layout will be reduced and optimized; a new station and technical building will be constructed; barrier-free access to the platforms will be established; and new parking slots will be added.
  • At the Nýřany railway station, access to the island platform will be provided via an underpass with elevators.
  • A new technical building will be constructed at the new Tlučná stop.
  • Thirteen bridge structures will be built.
  • Two new underpasses will enhance passenger safety by replacing the removed railroad crossings.
  • The project also includes the optimization of the track layout for significant freight transport in the area—the Nýřany-Metrans terminal.
